Warhammer 2: Can’t colonise a settlement

§Players have to find and destroy a Herdstone in Total War: Warhammer 2 if they notice that they are unable to colonise a settlement.

Overview

Total War: Warhammer 2 is an exhilarating video game that allows players to experience turn-based and real-time battles. It is part of the Total War series, which means that you can experience similar content, mechanics, and gameplay throughout the series.

Like the original game, it takes place in Warhammer Fantasy’s fictional universe. You are invited to move armies around the map and control settlements in a turn-based manner.

You can also engage in diplomacy or fight against artificial intelligence-controlled factions. The game has several activities for players to enjoy, such as creating customised battles, colonising settlements, completing the main campaign and participating in various gaming modes.

What is a settlement?

Players will find an array of settlements in the game, which are essentially towns, fortresses, or cities on the campaign map. Factions are usually focused on fighting to control and manage settlements, but this excludes Horde factions which are unable to control them.

The following table outlines some of the settlements you can find in the game and a description of each one:

Type of settlement Description

Ruins

They are not controlled by any faction and do not provide any bonuses. Ruins can be colonised by an army.

Faction Capital

It is the capital settlement of a specific faction, and is generally indicated by a golden border around the faction crest, next to the settlement’s name.

Herdstones

It is the only type of settlement that Beastmen factions can occupy.

Warhammer 2: Can’t colonise a settlement

Many players have noticed that when they are trying to colonise a settlement, the option has been greyed out. This means that they are unable to colonise that specific settlement due to an unknown reason.

Allegedly, players cannot colonise a settlement if there is a ritual site nearby that Beastmen faction. In this case, you first have to destroy the ritual site in order to colonise a settlement.

It can be difficult to know which settlements can be colonised, but you can search for a little marker next to the settlement user-interface. The rune will indicate whether it is part of a Beastmen blood-ground.

If it is, you first have to acquire the Herdstone to colonise a certain settlement. Keep in mind that your character’s race determines which settlements you can colonise.

This is because Dwarfs can only colonise Dwarf and Orc settlements, while Humans can colonise Vampire and Human settlements. Elves, on the other hand, have access to everything while Beastmen can only occupy Herdstones.

How to colonise a settlement

First, you should find a settlement on the campaign map before you can colonise it. Once you have found one, it is recommended that you determine whether or not it forms part of the Beastmen’s blood-ground. If it does, you should acquire the Herdstone that will enable you to colonise it.

However, if a settlement does not form part of the blood-ground, you can colonise it immediately. When you click on the settlement, you will see a Colonise option, which you can select to send your army to the settlement.

Keep in mind that colonising a settlement costs a lot of gold and you will most likely lose some of your army’s members.

How to find the Herdstone

Once you have located a settlement you want to colonise, you might have to acquire the Herdstone before you can colonise it successfully. It can be quite difficult to find it, however, it is advised that you search for a bunch of settlements with the Beastmen mark.

These settlements usually surround a single settlement that does not have the Beastmen mark. This settlement will generally have the Herdstone that you have to acquire in order to colonise a settlement.

Can all settlements be colonised?

As previously mentioned, there are different types of settlements in the game, but not all of them can be colonised by players. This is because some of the settlements are important faction structures, and as a result, players can only colonise ruins.

Colonising a ruin takes a turn, money, and many troops. Moreover, Skaven and Tomb Kings have the ability to colonise ruins and start them off at a higher level than other races.
