OSRS: Hard clue

Hard clue scrolls are the start of Treasure Trails in OSRS, and you have a chance of obtaining rare items if you complete the trail.

In this adventurous video game, Old School RuneScape (OSRS), you have to control a character as you explore a fictional world, destroy enemies, complete quests, and level up skills.

While progressing in the game, you will discover various items, such as Clue Scrolls, also referred to as Hard Clues. These clues are required to start a Treasure Trail.

What is the Treasure Trail?

Treasure Trails is a Distraction and Diversion which involves solving clues. Although this activity is available to free-to-play players, only the lowest of clues can be found and completed in free-to-play worlds. The other clue levels are exclusive to members’ worlds.

Players should bear in mind that there is no fixed location in OSRS for Treasure Trails and therefore, the clues may send you throughout the whole of Gielinor.

Therefore, we recommend having access to as many teleports and transportation systems as possible.

OSRS: Hard clue

A clue scroll (hard) is a valuable random drop which you can acquire by defeating high-level monsters. A hard clue scroll can be between 4 and 6 steps long.

These scrolls are the beginning of a Treasure Trail and at the end of a trail, you will receive a reward, which is randomly selected from a specific list.

You should note that hard clue scrolls are usually long and complex, and they often give you puzzle boxes to solve.

Hard scrolls involve trips to the Wilderness and fights with a Zamorak wizard. However, you may also have to defeat a Saradomin wizard or the double agent.

Although these scrolls are more difficult to solve than easy or medium scrolls, they give you many valuable rewards in return, such as runes, 3rd age and gilded weapons, and armour.

Only one hard scroll can be held, kept in death’s office, or stored in a bank at a time. If you have dropped the prior clue scroll while having done some of the steps on it, the next clue scroll that you receive will not have retained the steps of the dropped clue.

If you die in the Wilderness with a clue scroll above level 20, it will disappear, regardless of if it is a player-versus-player death or not. But the scroll will not disappear if it is an item kept on death, or if you have a clue box.

When dying in the Wilderness with a clue box, provided that you return quickly enough, the clue will stay in your inventory while the clue box is lost.

Thus, it is recommended that you carry a Wilderness Sword, a Teleport Crystal, a Royal Seed Pod, or an Explorer’s Ring. The clue scrolls are always kept above these items, but the items will be lost when you die.

Reward casket

You will receive a reward casket (hard) once you have completed the final clue of a hard clue scroll trail. This box can contain various rewards, some of which are incredibly rare.

The following table lists some of the rewards that you can procure from a hard reward casket:

Item Rarity
Robin Hood hat 1 out of 1,625
Saradomin d’hide Shield 1 out of 9,750
Gilded armor 1 out of 35,750

Rune armor 1 out of 27.1
Magic comp bow 1 out of 270.8

Certain hard clues require items that need a certain skill requirement to wear, wield, or access them. Some of the highest skill requirements are as follows:

Fishing 68 You need it to access the Fishing Guild
Magic 66 It is required to start Swan Song and to enter the Piscatoris Fishing Colony

Best way to get hard scrolls

The best way to get hard clue scrolls in OSRS is entirely subjective  as it depends on several individual factors, such as how much money you are willing to spend and how much effort you are willing to put in. The best methods include, but are not limited to:

  • Magpie Impling Jars
  • Hellhounds
  • Kotizo
  • Sarachnis
  • Vyrewatch Sentinels
  • Tackling Organized Crime

The fastest way to get hard scrolls is through Magpie Impling Jars, though this is also the most expensive. Defeating hellhounds is the best non-boss method, while Sarachnis is the easiest boss to defeat to acquire hard scroll clues.
