Is Fortnite overrated?

Despite Fortnite Battle Royale being a very successful game, one player stated that “it is such an overrated game with no unique characteristics that make it stand out.”

Fortnite is an online video game that was released in 2017. The game features three distinct modes that otherwise share the same general gameplay and game engine. Fortnite: Save the World is a cooperative hybrid-tower defense-shooter survival game for up to four players, who fight zombie-like creatures and defend objects with fortifications and traps they can build.

Fortnite Battle Royal is a free-to-play battle royal game in which up to a 100 players fight to be the last person standing. Fortnite Creative offers players complete freedom to create worlds and battle arenas.

While the Creative and Save the World modes have been successful for the game’s developer, Epic Games, Fortnite Battle Royale in particular became an overwhelming success and cultural phenomenon. The game attracted more than 125 million players in less than a year, earning hundreds of millions of dollars every month, and a $9 billion revenue in its first two years.

Despite the success of the game, there are many people who believe that the game is overrated. On a Quora thread, one user wrote, “I think that Fortnite is absolutely overrated. The battle royale format has become overly popular in a year, with Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and eventually Fortnite. The issue here is that PUBG is a lot more rendered and developed: they took the time to make the game semi-realistic. While Fortnite, on the other hand, can barely be considered realistic. Its characters are too similar with Overwatch style designs, and its fanbase is populated with annoying teenagers.”

On a Steam forum, another player wrote, “Fortnite is such an overrated game with no unique characteristics that make it stand out. It is just like what Minecraft has become; a kid’s game with a cancerous community who cannot accept other people’s opinions.”

The Red Epic recently compiled a “10 Reasons Why Fortnite Sucks” list. The number one reason for why the game supposedly sucks was because it is reportedly overrated.  According to the website, 1.6 percent of the Earth’s population play Fortnite. Some celebrities, including Drake, allegedly proclaimed that they play Fortnite, which motivated his fans to play the game as well. The Red Epic stated that this is the reason why the player numbers sky-rocketed, and it became one of the most popular games in 2018.

Reasons why Fortnite is bad

It is in the third person

Fortnite is described as one of the “laggiest” games ever, and to make matters worse, it uses third-person shooter. According to The Red Epic, if a first-person camera would have been used, it might have made the game better. The game also allegedly has a lot of bugs and glitches, which adds up to the game’s bad reputation.

Poor gameplay and graphics

Fortnite’s characters, sound effects, weapons and bullets, all seems to be too unrealistic for The Red Epic. While the game’s graphics have been described as a “joke” when it is compared to other mainstream games, the website also criticized Fortnite’s gameplay. Battle Royal is about fighting to the death, but Epic games decided to use hit markers instead of blood when a player is killed, which adds up to the unrealistic features in the game.

Zero skills needed

The Red Epic claims that no skill is needed to play Fortnite. The game only consists of one difficulty level, meaning that the only difference between a player who has been playing for a few months and a player who has been playing for a few hours, is the player count. Players are not able to level up in the game, they rather obtain ranks. However, the ranks do not really matter as players can switch between the different ranks.

After playing Fortnite for a few hours, the player will notice that the gameplay is completely repetitive and random number generator (RNG) based. This might be the reason for why children enjoy playing the game so much. That being said, The Red Epic states, “I wonder why an adult in his right mind would waste his time on this game. The hype behind it is uncalled for.”

The user still has to pay for it

Even though the Battle Royale mode is free to play, users still have to pay for the original Fortnite game mode. If a player wants to customize their in-game character, they need to pay for it using the in-game currency, V-bucks. However, the in-game currency can only be bought using real money.

Fortnite depends on Microtransactions to earn revenue. Microtransactions, by definition, are the small value transactions that a user makes, or the small amounts of money the user pays to progress in the game.

The game has tricked players ever since it has been released, as Fortnite has earned over a billion dollars from Microtransactions.

Fortnite is inappropriate

Fortnite has been banned in many households, and even in schools for multiple reasons. One of the reasons is because the game leads to inappropriate content. The latest hype for those who stream Fortnite on YouTube is called Strip Fortnite, in which the streamers are required to remove a piece of clothing for every player killed.

Teenagers started to play Strip Fortnite in order to gain more likes and followers on their YouTube channel. To make matters worse, some of these teenage strip Fortnite streamers were introduced to sexual dares and other inappropriate content while playing the game.

Another reason why the game is banned in multiple schools and households is that Fortnite supports violence, disruption, and murdering innocent people in order to gain points. Parents claim that they have seen an aggressive change in their children’s behaviour’s after playing Fortnite.

Fortnite lacks originality

According to The Red Epic, people should realize that Fortnite basically copied PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) gameplay. PUBG was first released in March 2017, while Fortnite launched in July 2017. When comparing the two games, a user will discover that the game modes and the gameplay is quite similar.

PUBG actually went to court over the claim that Fortnite copied its intellectual rights, weapons, map features and core elements. Epic Games was then forced to change some of Fortnite’s features in order to escape the lawsuit.

Fortnite is highly addictive

The last reason that is listed on The Red Epic’s list, is that Fortnite can be highly addictive, especially for young children. Children are reportedly refusing to eat, go to school, play outside and bath all so that they can play Fortnite. Many parents and teachers claim that the game has had a negative impact on multiple children’s mental health and behaviour.

Even though Fortnite is quite popular among children and adolescents, it is described as an overrated, awful game by adult gamers.
