In FFXIV, players can acquire various mounts, though some are exclusive to tank characters.
Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) is a well-renowned massively multiplayer online role-playing video game (MMORPG) that is set in the fictional world of Eorzea.
As the game’s name suggests, it is part of the classic Final Fantasy series, so you are likely to experience similar gameplay, mechanics, and areas throughout the games. In this persistent world, you can interact with the environment and with other players.
There are various areas and locations in the game that you can discover. Players should bear in mind that traveling in and around these zones can take some time, especially if they are running or walking. Luckily, you can acquire various mounts to make traveling faster.
Players should note that each class has specific mounts, for example, the tank characters have access to unique mounts that cannot be unlocked by other classes.
Mounts
Mounts are your main means of transportation in FFXIV. There is an array of mounts you can collect in-game, but various others are from special limited-time events and microtransactions in the online store, or they are distributed as a perk in the Collector’s Edition.
You will obtain your first mount, Company Chocobo, after completing the level 20 main story quest, A Hero in the Making. Players also have to join a Grand Company and complete the My Little Chocobo quest. Additional mounts can be collected by meeting certain requirements.
FFXIV: Tank mounts
Collecting mounts in FFXIV can be an essential part of the game for some players, and if you want to collect them all, you will have to create a tank character. This is because tanks have exclusive mounts, which are similar to the White Mage.
However, the tank-exclusive mounts are allegedly quite hard to acquire. Each tank class in the game has a unique mount. The Paladin class has the war lion, the Warriors have the war bear, and the Dark Knights have access to the war panther.
Moreover, the Gunbreaker class has the war tiger mount. These standard mounts can be upgraded, which adds additional armour and further details to the mount.
Each tank mount is unlocked in the same way: by completing specific tasks or certain achievements. The table below outlines what you have to achieve to unlock a specific tank exclusive mount:
Tank class | Mount and achievement |
Warrior | · War bear: But Somebody’s Gotta Do it
· Battle Bear: Tank you, Warrior III |
Paladin | · War Lion: But Somebody’s Gotta Do it
· Battle Lion: Tank you, Paladin III |
Dark Knight | · War Panther: But Somebody’s Gotta Do it
· Battle Panther: Tank you, Dark Knight III |
Gunbreaker | · War Tiger: Tank you, Gunbreaker II
· Battle Tiger: Tank you, Gunbreaker III |
It is crucial to note that these achievements can take quite a long time, especially if you are not playing a tank as a main character.
Completing the achievements
Players have to complete several achievements to get the tank-exclusive mounts. The table below lists how to complete each achievement:
Achievement | How to complete |
But Somebody’s Gotta Do it | Players have to complete 200 high-level full-party duties as a tank. High-level refers to anything that is an extreme trial, a normal raid, or a savage raid |
Tank you, II | You have to complete 200 dungeons, Extreme Trials, 50/60/70 roulette duties, or levelling roulettes while on the tank character |
Tank you, III | Players can complete 300 dungeons, Extreme Trials, 50/60/70 roulette duties, or levelling roulettes as the tank |
It is important to note that the Extreme Trials and the Dungeons must be level 61 or higher to complete the Tank you II and Tank you III achievements.
What are the best tank mounts?
The standard version of the tank mounts are referred to as war mounts, and the upgraded version is known as the battle mounts. The table below lists the best war and battle mounts in FFXIV.

Do tank-exclusive mounts’ speed increase?
Players can increase the speed of their ground mounts by using 2 methods. The first is through questlines, and the second is by purchasing enhancements.
You should bear in mind that all mounts have the same base movement speed increase. The speed of mounts are limited in certain areas, for example, Enhancement I is limited in Residential Districts and Idyllshire.
