The Blue Mage is a limited job in FFXIV, which essentially means that it has to learn spells in a different way.
Overview
Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) is a well-known video game that invites players to experience role-playing and adventure elements. It is set in the fictional world of Hydaelyn, which is a planet filled with various environments and climates covering three large continents.
However, the game takes place in a region called Eorzea. You are able to create and customise a character before stepping into a region, in which you can interact with both the environment and with other players. Moreover, you can craft items, join guilds and complete quests to gain experience points.
It is important to note that the game does not only allow you to customise your character, but you can also select your job. This means that you can either become a Disciple of War or a Disciple of Magic.
That being said, you can also become a Disciple of Land or a Disciple of Hand when you reach a certain level.
You should note that each job features different classes, each of which have unique spells and abilities. Moreover, each class and job has a specific role in battle to make the gameplay easier.
What is the objective of spells?
As mentioned above, there are 4 different types of jobs in FFXIV, and each job consists of different classes for you to pick from. Moreover, each class features various different types of spells, which you can unlock and use to make battles and general gameplay easier.
It thus comes as no surprise to say that the objective of spells is to aid you in your game progress. If you do not equip or slot spells, you will have a difficult time advancing in the game and defeating enemies.
However, if you have carefully selected your spells that fit your specific class, you may have an easier time succeeding in battle. It is believed that some classes and their spells perform much better than others in different types of gaming modes.
This means that a specific class with certain spells will perform better in the player-versus-playing gaming mode, while another class with other spells will do better in the player-versus-environment gaming mode.
FFXIV: Blue Mage Spells
One of the jobs that you can take on in FFXIV, is the Blue Mage, who currently has over 40 different spells for you to unlock and play with. Unlike the traditional jobs, you can only learn new spells for this class by defeating specific monsters in battle.
That being said, learning new spells can be very time consuming and you will need a lot of patience. This is because you need to see the desired spell cast by the monster before you defeat it, and you only have a small chance of learning the spell.

Are certain spells more powerful than others?
It is clear that the Blue Mage has a variety of spells that you can unlock. You can obtain some of them through questing and achievements, however, most of the spells can only be learned by defeating monsters.
You should note that all the spells are rated in the form of stars. This means that the best and most powerful spells form part of the 5-star category, while the less powerful spells are part of the 1-star category.
It is believed that the 5-star spells are much more difficult to learn than the 1-star spells. This is because the 5-star spells are much more powerful and can only be obtained from strong monsters.
The following table indicates the above-mentioned spells and their star rating:
Spell name | Star rating |
Sticky Tongue | 4-star |
Faze | 3-star |
1000 Needles | 4-star |
Bad Breath | 3-star |
Glower | 4-star |
Flamethrower | 4-star |
Aqua Breath | 4-star |
Loom | 1-star |
Feather Rain | 5-star |
Off-Guard | 2-star |
Veil of the Whorl | 5-star |
Doom | 4-star |
Glass Dance | 5-star |
Mountain Buster | 5-star |
Tail Screw | 4-star |
Fire Angon | 3-star |
Ink Jet | 3-star |
Diamondback | 4-star |
It is recommended that end-game players only use 5-star or 4-star spells, as they will make your gameplay and battles significantly easier. However, early game or mid-game players can use the 3-star, 2-star or 1-star spells as the game’s content is not as difficult yet.

How to unlock the Blue Mage
It is important to note that the Blue Mage is designed for solo play and that is seen as a limited job.
This means that it is not recommended that you participate in group content with this character, as it performs best when you play alone. That being said, you can use this class in group content even if it is not ideal.
Please remember that as a Blue Mage, certain in-game activities will not be available to you, as it is a limited job. Additionally, you are unable to advance in the main scenario with it.
In order to unlock the Blue Mage, you first have to meet specific requirements. You must be either a level 50 Disciple of War, or a level 50 Disciple of Magic character. Moreover, your 2.0 main scenario quests must be completed.
If you meet these requirements, then you have to speak with the Yellowjacket, who can be found near the main Aetheryte in Limsa as part of the quest, “Out of the Blue.” It is advised that you complete that quest in order to unlock the Blue Mage.
