Elden Ring: How to use spells

Players can use spells in Elden Ring, either by equipping a Staff or a Scared Seal, depending on your Magic Spell classification.

You are invited to enjoy combat and exploration elements in this action role-playing game, Elden Ring. Players can control a customisable character on a journey to repair the titular Elden Ring with the end goal of becoming the Elden Lord.

Elden Ring is presented through a third-person perspective, and players can freely explore its interactive open world. But before you do this, you have to create and customise a character.

During the character-creation phase, you can select a class, which determines your skills and abilities. Some classes have spells, but few players know how to use them.

Classes in Elden Ring

There are currently 10 playable classes in Elden Ring, each of which has unique talents, playstyles, and abilities. Heroes feel comfortable with battle axes, as they are descendants of a badlands chieftain.

While Bandits strike for weak points using their bows,  Astrologers have the ability to read fate in the stars. You can also select the Warrior class, which features high Dexterity and medium physical statistics.

Moreover, players can be Prisoners who start the game with an estoc, a staff, and a shield. However, if you prefer melee combat, you can choose the Confessor class.

If you are up for the challenge, you can choose the Wretch class, but bear in mind that they are the weakest starting class. If you want to experience knighthood, the Vagabond class is perfect for you.

Moreover, you can select a Prophet with high Faith, or a Samurai with excellent fighting skills.

Elden Ring: How to use spells

Some of the classes in Elden Ring use weapons to fight their enemies, while others use Magic spells and abilities to deal damage. With Magic Spells, you can cast spells to enhance, attack, or defend, depending on the situation.

There are 2 types of magical spell classifications, namely, Sorceries and Incantations. Sorceries have traditional magical abilities, whereas Incantations include sacred holy magic to heal or repel the undead. Both classifications summon a powerful function from the Dark Arts.

Whenever you use either Incantation or Sorcery, the spell will deplete your Focus Point (FP) bar. Having enough FP guarantees that players will be able to cast a spell. In order to perform an Incantation Spell, you need to have a Sacred Seal, whereas Sorcery Spells require a Staff.

Each classification of magic requires that you are of a certain level with specific attributes. In other words, if you use Sorceries, you have to allocate points to your Intelligence attribute, while Incantation uses the Faith attribute.

Increasing these attributes boosts the damage potential of the spells that you cast. In addition to Intelligence and Faith, you can allocate points into Mind and Arcane.

The Mind attribute is linked to your FP bar; so the higher it is, the more FP you will have. Although Arcane is rarely used, some spells require it.

To cast a magic spell in Elden Ring, you either have to equip your character with a Staff or a Sacred Seal, depending on your classification. To equip spells, you need to go to a Site of Grace and interact with it.

In the menu, you will find the Spells and Incantations that you have learned, bought, or found. You can then equip your spells and use them against enemies.

The best Sacred Seals in Elden Ring

It is worth noting that some Sacred Seals are considered better than others, as they provide better buffs and benefits. During the early game phase, the Finger Seal is considered the best and it can be bought at the Twin Maiden Husks for approximately 800 Runes.

As you advance in the game, you will need a stronger Sacred Seal. If you want to cast flame Incantations, you should use the Frenzied Flame Seal. However, you can also use the Giants’ Seal.

Later in the game, you can equip the Gravel Stone Seal, which is found in Leyndell after defeating the knight near the West Capital Rampart Site of Grace.

The best Staves in Elden Ring

If you are planning to use Sorceries, you have to equip a staff. These staves are considered the best in the game:

Staff name Description
Academy Glintstone Staff Although it is a fairly niche weapon, it is considered one of the best staves in certain scenarios
Azur’s Glintstone Staff This staff is not the most powerful, but it has a rare property; it reduces the casting time of Sorceries and Incantations
Meteorite Staff It is considered the best staff in the early game phase
Staff of Loss This staff’s power has little to do with its base spell scaling. Instead, its excellence comes from its secondary ability, which boosts invisibility sorceries
Lusat’s Glintstone Staff It is considered the most powerful staff in the game and is thus required to complete endgame content

Can spells be purchased?

As you advance in Elden Ring, you may come across new spells by looting chests, or by completing quests and talking to specific non-player characters (NPCs). However, multiple vendors sell basic spells in exchange for Runes.

Although they are basic spells, they can be quite useful, especially early in the game. It is advisable that you farm Runes to purchase these spells as quickly as possible.
