Stone of Agony, also referred to as Shards of Agony, is a unique item in Diablo 4 and it is used to summon the Echo of Duriel.
Diablo 4 invites players to create and customize a character to explore the nightmarish realm of Sanctuary. To progress in the game, you have to gradually collect stronger equipment by defeating increasingly difficult enemies.
Stone of Agony
Season 2 of Diablo 4 recently launched, and it focuses on an army of vampires who are terrorizing Sanctuary.
These vampires are gathering the blood of innocents for their dark master and only you can wield the enemy’s blood magic against them.
In addition to the new storyline, players can vanquish new endgame bosses, acquire 42 new Legendary Items and join the fight in the Blood Harvest to earn seasonal progress and reputation.
One of the endgame bosses that you can defeat is the Echo of Duriel, which is also referred to as The King of Maggots.
Duriel is considered the toughest boss that Blizzard added to the game as part of the Season of Blood.
Before you can summon this boss, you need to get his summoning materials; Stone of Agony, which is also known as Shards of Agony, and Mucus-Slick Eggs.
To procure the Shards of Agony, players must defeat Grigoire in the Hall of the Penitent on Torment World Tier.
Keep in mind that you need 5 Living Steel to summon this boss. If you defeat Grigoire, you will only receive 1 Shard of Agony, which means that you need to defeat the boss twice to earn 2 Stones of Agony.
Once you have acquired the Stones of Agony, you also need to procure Mucus-Slick Eggs to summon Duriel.
Duriel’s Attack Patterns
After summoning Duriel, you need to conquer him to earn rewards. During the fight, you can encounter the following attack patterns:
|Poison Pool||The boss will shoot a poison projectile which will turn into a poison pool upon hitting the ground. These pools can restrict your movement.|
|Claw Attack||Players should not stand too close to Duriel as he performs a series of claw attacks which end with a ground stab, and this creates a poison pool.|
|Charge Attack||Duriel performs a charge attack to close the distance between himself and your character. You can use your Evade to get out of his way.|
|Burrow Attack||When Duriel’s health depletes enough, he will burrow underground and emerge from one of the holes along his adds before shooting a poison attack. Since this skill is difficult to avoid, we recommend that you avail your Mobility skill and use it to get out of the way.|
In addition to the Shards of Agony, players h must acquire 2 Mucus-Slick Eggs, however, you have to defeat Varshan beneath the Tree of Whispers on Torment World Tier to acquire them.
To fight this boss, players must obtain a Gurgling Head, Blackened Femur, Trembling Hand a Malignant Heart.
These Malignant body parts can be acquired by opening Tree of Whisper Caches or by destroying the Grotesque Debtor enemies who have a chance of appearing after world bosses have been defeated.
When you have vanquished Duriel, you will earn rich rewards, but players should note that the rewards are determined by their character’s class:
How to summon Grigoire
As previously explained, you need to conquer Grigoire to acquire Stones of Agony. Unfortunately, you need to acquire materials to summon the boss to defeat him.
To summon Grigoire in World Tier 4, you need to fight through the Hall of the Penitent in the Dry Steppes and place 5 Living Steel on the Altar.
Players can acquire Living Steel by opening the Tortured Gifts of Living Steel. These chests randomly appear during Diablo 4’s Helltide events. Keep in mind that you need 300 Aberrant Cinders to open these chests.
Before summoning Grigoire, we recommend that you equip Lightning Resistance and craft Lightning Resistance Elixirs. During the fight, you should try to stay behind him to survive the fight.
